12:51 am: OVFF
I'm back (OK, by the time I'd posted this, I've been back for a while) from OVFF -- Ohio Valley Filk Fest -- which was held this weekend in the Columbus area Doubletree. This was a smaller convention than I'm used to (~300 people) but it kept me busier (and up later) than most or all other cons I go to. Many, many Big Name Filkers were in attendance. There was only a little more than one "programming track", yet there was always something I wanted to do and there were two things scheduled for the same time that I could only attend one of.

For those who care what I sing, in the open filk circles I managed to squeeze in (slightly out of this order):

Renoir Song, by Ookla the Mok*
Why I Won't Get You A Beer, by Tom Smith
I am Cow, by the Arrogant Worms*
Sheep Marketing Ploy, by Tom Smith
Two Guys Kissin' (Ruined My Life), by Tom Smith
Garlic Is For Lovers, by Tom Smith
Hamster Brain, by Tom Smith (shortly before I went to another filk room and heard Tom himself perform it)

I had a Vixy and Tony song and a Moonwulf song, honest, I just didn't get around to singing them...

(*or maybe by just some of the band members, or maybe even by someone else entirely but at least the cited band performs it)

Photos are up on Picasaweb and a smaller subset is on my Facebook page.

Not really surprising. Need to get sloth reduced a little bit. Preferably by regular, vigorous lust, but you can't always get what you want.

12:09 am: Apparently ConClave was a lot smaller this year than I remember it being last year... Still more Dorsai than you could shake a stick at (and since some seemed to be performing security functions, it would have been a worse idea than usual to shake a stick at them). Space-Time Theater did a great job with their 20th anniversary show. We learned why so many cons have the masquerade (or some other big function) and the art auction in the same space, even though that delays the masquerade: too many people want/need to be at both.

Apparently the Sunday open filk that was supposed to start at 4 never materialized (or did so in the consuite at 5, but I didn't want to stay that long given the 6 hour drive home--I'd already used the +1 to Stay Up Late I get from CDT on Saturday night) But Friday and Saturday nights...

As you may recall (or never have heard, thus the recap) earlier this year at DucKon's Dead Duck afterparty I discovered that "does anyone have the words to X" means "I volunteer to sing X if someone comes up with a copy of the lyrics". Thus it was that I butchered "Falling Free" (never soloed before; sang the 3 harmony parts much more than the melody), and was dumb^H^H^H^Hbrave enough to ask for the lyrics to "Rich Fantasy Lives" and butcher that slightly less. And I resolved to not only practice some of these songs, but practice the melody rather than a harmony part.

Since Tom Smith wasn't feeling well enough to be at either night's open filk, there was nobody to stop my streak as Advanced Tom Substitute at ConClave. Between the two nights combined, folks were gracious enough to humor me as I managed to belt out (in no particular order, and I may be forgetting one):

Sheep Marketing Ploy (The Ballad of Fenton)
RastaMatrix.com
Two Guys Kissin' (Ruined My Life) ('bout time!)
Garlic Is For Lovers
Rich Fantasy Lives (much better the second time around, esp. since I was practicing the melody)
Boy and His Frog (much easier to not crack if you're really busy singing it)
Take your Hands Off the Bear (for Tom it's about the bear; just a breakup song for me)

After all this, and a number of good performers singing this weekend, what's stuck in my head? "Naked Mole-Rat (I Don't Love You)".

AAAAAAAAUGH! It's an ear-rat!

(More variety next con, I promise -- 'cept there will be a lot more competition for my time on the part of the room parties at WindyCon...I hope.)

08:01 am: The new literacy?
Has anyone else seen http://www.wired.com/techbiz/people/magazine/17-09/st_thompson?

The argument is that "kids" (by the time they get to college?) are not using chat/texting abbreviation in formal writings, and have been writing (blogging) for others to read long enough that it's had a positive impact--before this, kids rarely wrote anything to be seen by more than just the teacher who assigned it...therefor not caring much and therefore not really getting the effort or experience to develop their skills.

10:48 am: OK, my "final" DucKon photos are up at http://www.flickr.com/photos/98132121@N00/tags/duckon2009/. Essentially all these photos were filk circle or concert photos. Someday I'll start posting fewer and being a bit more selective, but I don't know how easy that will be to do until I have all the organization down, which I'm still working on.

I believe the Dead Duck photos are tagged with deadduck as well as duckon2009.

There's probably at least one con that I don't have posted anywhere...not sure which until I go back and look.

02:16 am: OK ... techie advice needed here: what flickr clients do people recommend? Flickr is awful and clunky compared to Picasa, especially to Picasa's PC client, but I was dumb enough to spend $25 upgrading to a pro account before I really figured things out.

Second, is there a good/easy way to split my family photos picasa account from my other stuff? Maybe just disassociate the home email address, then sign up again with that address? I'm not trying for extra quota, I just want to have the albums public but not have family browse into the rest of my life or vice versa unless they expressly look at the other account...

I think I got a good haul. I didn't cut these quite as close as others have.
